The unit of currency is the Rand. The Rand is divided into 100 cents; larger denominations are always in multiples of ten. All denominations are clearly distinguishable by colour and pictures. Exchange rates fluctuate quite widely, so visitors are encouraged to exchange their funds at the current exchange rate.
Travelers' cheques in most currencies are the safest way to carry money and are accepted by banks and most commercial establishments.

American visitors should be prepared to present registration numbers for health care insurance coverage, to pay cash and to reimbursed later and to sign documents accepting financial responsibility for services rendered.
Policies at each hospital vary. Regardless of financial status or health care coverage, South African hospitals will never refuse treatment to those requiring it. |
