With sales a touch under R2 million, and that in recession, Nashua Art in the Park clearly commands a significant presence in the South African artscape. Had it not been for the recession, sales at the 2009 edition may well have continued the upward trend since 2002 to underline the selling exhibition’s growing impact. The 2010 event – celebrating the 48th anniversary – will be no different, judging by pre-entry interest from across the country. Competition for the 55 stands is tough and if recent history is a guide, more than a 100 artists will be turned away on account of a rigorous selection policy. Little wonder then that works sold at Nashua Art in the Park often find their way to boardrooms and collections, individual and corporate, across the world. The five-day event boasts an impossibly romantic bonhomie, aided by a magnificent setting under giant plane trees on the banks of the Msunduzi River, the autumnal splendour of falling leaves, and the sherry at night … Nashua Art in the Park is one of a handful of selling exhibitions where buyers and the public are able to rub shoulders with the artists themselves. A diverse programme of music and entertainment complement the exhibition that will be held on the eve of the 2010 World Cup, from June 2-6.
