Music and Theater

Music and drama bring people together in different ways and at interesting venues, be it as the performer or as the audience. This is most popular in September when Pietermaritzburg hosts a month of festivities to be enjoyed by young and old.

Hilton Arts Festival

Here is the opportunity to be entertained by South Africa’s best in theatre. During this … day period, the Hilton College theatre alone stages over …. performances. Other venues like Wedgewood host the more intimate recitals and even exhibit the works of local artists.

Music Revival

Pietermaritzburg is blessed with the exceptional talent and enthusiasm of classical musician Christopher Duigan. Not only does this brilliant pianist silence the most restless of us as he weaves his magic at the piano, but he orchestrates an active concert programme, ŒMusic Revival¹ throughout the year. These popular performances, held at selected intimate venues, present regular performances by KZN based musicians including the Kerimov Trio, and have introduced us to a star studded selection of South African talent and visiting international artists.

Folk Club

The Pietermaritzburg Folk and Contemporary Music Association is most active in our city and welcomes locals and out-of-towners to join in at their regular meetings and jam sessions. This is the ideal place for up and coming muso¹s to get to know the ins and outs of the local music scene and find support. Picnic style concerts are held at the Botanical Gardens during the dry season and bimonthly gigs take place at McGinty¹s at 50 Durban Rd.

Organ Society

Our City Hall’s pipe organs is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. It celebrated its centenary in 2001, and is still in demand for recitals and concerts today.
