Steam trains

The KZN Railway Museum restores old steam trains and offers both scheduled and chartered train rides in the area. This is a wonderful way to see the countryside. Regular trips depart from Hilton Station for a fun excursion to destinations in the midlands, and from Pietermaritzburg to Inchanga. So hop on before the whistle blows on you!


The city is host to a number of cricket clubs, some of which contest the highly competitive Inter-City League. A visit to the Oval is a must for cricket lovers.


Ten immaculately maintained bowling greens makes Pietermaritzburg a favourite bowls destination, attested to by the number of national tournaments staged in the city.

Action cricket

This popular and social sport is played indoors by teams of six. The level of competition is determined by the players, while the fun factor is guaranteed.

Birding projects in the area include the ongoing cape parrot count and preservation work on cranes, being one of the very few areas where all three crane species roam wild. A gentle sport with not-so-gentle tactics, was first played in France over 200 years ago. Today you can enjoy a game or two at a picturesque venue at Alexandra Park
