October is international Month of Older Persons,
The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Older Persons is celebrated annually on October 1 to recognize the contributions of older persons and to examine issues that affect their lives. The International Day of Older Persons is a special day for senior citizens worldwide
As South Africa joins the world to celebrate contributions of the older persons, we have combined this with Social Tourism, a project aimed at making tourism leisure accessible to the majority, including youth, families and elderly people.
Today, (Thursday, 29 October 2020).a group of senior citizens were treated to the tour of the KZN Freedom Route. The tour covers struggle icons like Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Alan Paton, John Dube and Chief Albert Luthuli and started in Pietermaritzburg and ended in Stanger via Durban.
“Leisure tourism is a social activity that helps to generate positive emotions and build social relationships. Inclusion of economically weak or otherwise disadvantaged groups like senior citizens in the tourism participation, is part of our mandate” said Dumisani Mhlongo Director of Pietermaritzburg Tourism.
